Out for a walk...

Out here most of what you see are the greens and browns of the nature, the long fields of grass and the nearby forests. Today I took the dog with me and we went walking to a nearby village. Two reasons for this impromptu walk: I needed to get out and get fresh air on this sunny but cold day and drop some important papers to a friend nearby.

Chicken Pot Pie

I decided that tonight I would be in charge of dinner. I told my sister I would buy the ingredients and make them something I think everybody would like. I thought of maybe making something Filipino, but sadly they are picky eaters and I wasn't in the mood to be disappointed. So I decided on a Chicken Pot Pie, which is comfort food. And something creamy works every time, right? My sister was working the whole day and I made sure to prepare this in advance so we could catch a movie at 8:30PM. What I didn't know was that my nephew was bringing a friend over and there was a fire at a nearby village making them both late to come home. At 8:25PM, we were just in the process of clearing away the table. Tant pis (never mind), we told each other, we'll go watch the movie on Tuesday.

Soiree Beaujolais Nouveau 2011

So while Dad and MR were partying at the Beaujolais Nouveau party in Marco Polo Hotel Cebu, I was also getting ready for my own little soiree. This one wasn't held at a fancy hotel, but was equally enjoyable. And I got to help the day before for the set-up. I would have helped with the cooking process but I was feeling sick this morning and opted not to in order to rest and have enough strength for the big event tonight.

Beaujolais Nouveau Wine Selection

Just a quick stop to show you the wines we picked up for the Beaujolais Nouveau.

McDonald's in France + Twilight: Breaking Dawn

We had big plans for tonight: dinner at McDonald's + watch Twilight - Breaking Dawn afterwards. My niece and I were super excited for this night and we spent the last few days watching the first 3 Twilight movies. I'm not a big fan, but I've read all the books and I'm always curious how it will look like in the movies. Since we live in a small town with no movie house nearby, this meant we had to go to Metz, which is the next big city with a cinema - about 35 minutes from where we live.

Dinner Party Chez Sophie

Sophie is a close friend of my sister here in France. The first time I met her was when she came over to the house to talk to my sister the first week I got here. She knew that I was looking for a job so when I told her, she told me that her work place was looking to hire somebody and she suggested that I try it out. I had brought my resume / CV with me. But it was in English and she offered to help me and change some of the wordings. We spent the afternoon together in my sister's bureau. And as she left that night, she invited me to come along for a little dinner soirée she was having on a coming weekend.

Croque Monsieur

Dinner at my sister's house are usually very light. It's either a soup, a salad, cold cuts, or in tonight's case a sandwich. Croque Monsieur. We were joined by 2 more guys as my nephew was bringing a classmate and my brother-in-law's stagiaire / trainee was having dinner with us too. Luckily, we had enough ingredients for everybody.

Lunch House Invitation - French-Style

Early this week, my sister informed me that we won't need to prepare food for this Sunday because we were invited for lunch at her Mother-in-Law's house. They live 100 meters away from each other and I know her especially well because I used to spend time with her on the summers I was here as a little girl. Her Mother-in-Law is a very calm woman who I admire and look up to. She loves to cook, sew, and maintains her own little vegetable and fruit garden. She also used to have a small housing with hens and I used to go get fresh eggs with her early every morning. But those fresh eggs are just a memory now as she has let go of her hens because it was becoming too hard for her to maintain at her age.

Salade Vosgienne

I am getting used to my new lifestyle and eating habits.  Unlike in the Philippines; I don't eat white rice twice a day anymore. Sure, I miss it, but I'm also enjoying the new dishes I've been missing. I'm not sure what other French households do, but at my sister's house they try to eat meat or a heavy meal only once a day. Breakfast is usually a piece of bread and coffee, lunch is usually the heavy meal with meat and a siding, and the dinner is a soup or something else equally light.

French Red Wine

There are many things that I've gotten used to do and not to do since I got here. I don't eat meals with a spoon (unless when it's soup). Bread is present at all meals. A piece of cheese after the main course. A light dinner unless invited or at a restaurant. And a glass of red wine during lunch.

Fish Fillet with Onions and Tomatoes

Today, I am home alone. Well, not exactly. The dog is here with me too. And my brother-in-law comes time to time to get something quick. But my nephew is working in another farm, my niece's vacation has ended and she started school this morning, and my sister is at work. I preoccupy myself by going room to room, opening the windows to let fresh air in the house and doing household chores. It is pretty quiet, although the dog can be a little be naughty and hard-headed at times. LOL.

Crepes Cake

My niece and I chatted early this morning, talking about anything and everything. She asked me questions about Cebu and the Philippines and I asked her stuff about herself too. We're still in the getting to know each other phase. At times we act more like friends than aunt-niece, but I guess that comes from the fact that we are just a few years apart in age. We casually branched into the topic of desserts, specifically crepes. She likes the weird combination of a crepe with salad and nutella. I told her I've never tried making one, but I've always wondered about the Crepes Cake. She asked to know more about it and it must have caught her interest because she wanted to make one right away.

Orange Juice + Grenadine Cocktail

I woke up extremely happy today because MR was able to upload pictures of SM and him trick or treating yesterday. They both look very good and I am happy they are able to adjust and have fun despite the separation. MR has to go to an internet cafe to go online because there is still no internet connection at home. I must say MR is very thoughtful of my feelings as he could have waited a little bit before uploading the photos but he wanted me to be up to date and let me know that our daughter won 2nd place in Best in Costume at her school's Halloween program. The theme was Superheroes vs. Villains and she was dressed as Harley Quinn from the Batman Comic. I must be a little biased, but she looked adorable! The next day, they went trick or treating at a nearby village which is known to have really cool and original house decorations. It looks like SM received a lot of candies this year and I hope she won't forget to brush her teeth regularly. I was later told by Dad that SM herself thought she had too many candies and divided them into 5 small bags to share with her cousins.
