Chou Farci / Stuffed Cabbage - Au Charolais in Morhange, France
I know two butchers in the village of Morhange, France. Boucherie - Charcuterie - Traiteur, like it says on one of the establishment. By the way, those three words mean Butchery - Delicatessen - Caterer. As part of their catering services, they also prepare and sell a dish of the day. Always 2 choices are provided. I go to Laurent Friederich's store today, SARL au Charolais, and fixate on the choice of Chou Farci / Stuffed Cabbage.
It's been so long that I've had this. Dad makes terrific Tomates Farcies / Stuffed Tomatoes and this dish is the same except you use cabbage instead of tomatoes. The vegetable is stuffed with ground meat (usually beef, but I like a mixture of ground pork and beef). I personally prefer Stuffed Tomatoes than Stuffed Cabbage - I feel that there is an after-taste with cabbage. But I couldn't help but order this - more for its sentimental value than hunger. I miss my Dad so much and this is the longest we've ever been apart!
Laurent Friederich sells his dish of the day 7€. It's a pretty good price as I find the servings are good for at least 2 people. In a microwavable container, I had two pieces of Stuffed Cabbage on top of steamed white rice and tomato sauce. I love that people can grab a freshly-cooked meal at the local butcher - for people busy at work or who are short of time at home. I've tried those microwavable and frozen ready to eat meals in store and so far I've only had crap! Sure 7€ is definitely more expensive than those 3€ frozen meals, but at least you're guaranteed to have freshly cooked home meals and bigger servings too!
