La Table du Saulnois in Maizieres-les-Vic, France

This is just the prettiest plate I've ever had. The combination of colors and smell coming from this dish honestly left me breathless a second or two. I somehow feel weird trying to put down into words how I felt, but my sister, her sister-in-law, and I stared at our plates to admire it before taking our first bite, not even sure where to begin.

I was just done preparing what would have been our simple dinner tonight - boiled potatoes with cottage cheese- when my brother-in-law came home and said that it's been a while since he'd eaten out and wanted to eat at a terrace tonight. We didn't argue with the idea and decided that the potatoes and cheese would do well in the refrigerator one more night. They made reservations and we quickly changed. On our way out, one of my brother-in-law's sister arrived with her husband and asked if we planned to go to the Horse Festival a couple of villages away. We convinced them to come eat with us and so at 7:30PM, we arrived at La Table du Saulnois in the Village of Maizieres-les-Vic. TH wanted to eat out on a terrace and we were given a table for 5, but the sky looked like the rain would come during our meal so we asked for an emergency table inside just in case. We started our meal with drinks, the men had Bierre Picon / Picon and Beer (3.40€/per glass) and us girls had a glass of Champagne each (7.00€/per glass). The sky was still behaving at this point. And then our main dishes came out. Again, the girls had the same dish - Filet de Rouget aux Ecrevisses Sauce Homard (16.20€). In English, Filet of Red Mullet Fish with Crawfish in a Lobster Sauce Reduction. With our fish, we had accompanying vegetables - Puree of Red Cabbage topped with Nuts, a Leek Flan, Creamed Fennel, and inside the glass jar, Ratatouille. We feasted with our eyes and our mouths! Everything was delicious! I especially loved the Creamed Fennel and will definitely try to make some at home. Then the rain came and we had to settle inside to enjoy our dessert. I had a bowl of Fruit Sorbet - a scoop each of Apple, Strawberry, and Passion Fruit. The Passion Fruit was my favorite amongst the three. Then we had a cup of coffee. The chef came out of his kitchen and we chatted with him a little. A really nice fellow who offered a glass of digestive to the men! That was some strong stuff so I was glad he didn't force us girls to try some.

La Table du Saulnois is a restaurant to look forward too and is the kind of place one would go for special occasions or even on ordinary days like today. It has the feeling of a fancy place and yet remains a homey place where you can comfortably eat at with friends and family. It definitely has that refined touch in the food and ambiance, which you can observe in the plates we were served. After all, we do eat with our eyes first. But despite being a notch higher, price-wise it is not more expensive than other restaurants nearby. This is probably one of the best meals out I've had so far!
