My Favorites: Tarte aux Fraises in Chez Dauffer, Morhange - France

I've decided to add two new categories for my blog posts - The Challenge and My Favorites. I've already posted my first blog post for The Challenge last night. It was a challenge doing the work as well as writing the post! Today, I am writing my first blog for My Favorites. As you've probably guessed it from the name, this category will feature all of my favorites. I'm doing it for myself and you as well, my readers. I figure it'll make it a little easier for you to get to know me more.

Shopping Bag: Pot-au-Feu - Au Charolais in Morhange, France

The weather is changing. There is more wind -cold wind. Mornings are colder. Temperatures are lower. The sun sets earlier. Days are shorter.  It's official - Welcome to the Autumn / Fall Season! And like I told DO the other day, I love the Autumn Season for its colors and for the food! I always find a silver lining! Hihihihi.

Creamed Spinach

This is one of the easiest recipes ever! It is a dish I like to make every time I cook fish here. The way I felt about Creamed Spinach when I was younger was exactly how I felt about Red Beets. And just like the Red Beets, I have grown to love this! Creamed Spinach is one of my favorite side dishes and it's so simple to make! Just make sure to have the right ingredients! I don't know about you, but I prefer frozen spinach than canned spinach. And like all creamy sauces, my little tip is to add a pinch of grated nutmeg. You may not know it now, but that little spice makes a total difference to your cream sauces! I know it does to mine.

Pick-Up: Kebab in Les Andalouses - Specialites Orientales in Morhange, France

Dad and I found ourselves home alone tonight. DO and TH brought back TH's Dad to the hospital in Metz and ate dinner in the city. My nephew, JO, was eating at a friend's house. So it was just the two of us and I really didn't want to cook dinner. I thought to myself that it's been a while since I've had a Kebab and come to think of it, I could totally eat one tonight. Dad has already tasted a Kebab about a month ago and he isn't really a fan. I picked up a pizza for him instead at a nearby pizzeria, but too bad for him, his pizza was disappointing! I should have known better - AR and LU ordered a pizza there just last week and they were majorly disappointed too. I didn't even bother to take photos of the pizza, but instead focused on my Kebab which was nothing close to disappointing! :)

This is dedicated to all restaurant dishwashers, who whistle coming to work, are elbow-deep busy cleaning plates during their shift, and go home with an aching back.

Chez Dauffer - Boulangerie / Patisserie in Morhange, France

We were in a hurry today. I was busy the whole morning with several errands and in the afternoon we had two house visits about 45 kilometers away from home. Between the two, I really had no time to make lunch so Dad and I decided we would eat something quick in town. I shouldn't have bothered! I hate to be mean, but this was by far the worst meal I've had since I've been here!

Lemon Meringue Pie

This is one of my nephew's absolute favorite dessert, well after my Creme Caramel. The first time I made this, the meringue was all weird. The second time I made this, the meringue was slightly overcooked. Although it was still delicious, it wasn't pleasing to the eyes at all. This was my third try and like they say, third time's a charm!

Cherry Tomato Salad - The Day of Good Things

I got surprising news this morning. I am going to work this Saturday night.  I wished I could give you more details, but I'm afraid to jinx it. It isn't a fabulous office job, but I am quite excited. When I was younger, my dream job was to be a pediatrician, like a lot of little girls and boys I suppose. But I grew up and that dream just wasn't a dream anymore. I really don't have a dream job anymore. I know my passion is food -whether cooking or eating it. But I don't see myself as a chef. I really don't know what I want. But, I've always been fascinated with weird ideas. Yes, I will be the first person to admit that I am weird. LOL. Anyways, I always thought it would be cool to come to France and have odd jobs. I don't really know why. This Saturday is a small job. I say small because it is one of those jobs that nobody inspires to have, but is one that is necessary nevertheless. It is going to be a test trial. I sure hope it goes well!

Creperie Mado in Dieuze, France

This is the second weekend in a row that we've spent our Sunday afternoon in Metz. TH's father is still admitted in the hospital, but he is doing a lot better than the last time we saw him. He has adapted well to the post-op and his medications. The only thing that must be hard for him is spending his days doing nothing, but it is only a matter of time now before he comes home. On our way home yesterday, it was almost dinner time and DO mentioned a Creperie that just opened in Dieuze, the place where DO has her store. When she asked if we were up to trying it out, we said - why not?

Rabbit in Mustard Sauce

Whenever we mention eating rabbit at home, there's always an anecdote Dad likes to share. There was a time when we were invited at a family friend's house for dinner. We were served this particular meat dish that we all truly enjoyed. In the car going home, Mom mentioned how much she enjoyed the chicken dish we had. "Chicken?," Dad replied, "That wasn't chicken, Cherie. That was Rabbit!". "OMG," said my mom with a tiny voice and a funny look on her face. As much as she probably would have, she couldn't deny it - she loved eating Rabbit!

Saturday Night Dinner - The Day of Total Pressure

I felt the weight of the world on my shoulders when TH asked me if I could cook dinner for him and 8 of his farmer friends (plus DO, Dad, and I = 12 in total). I agreed, but totally freaked out till the D-Day. Thankfully, TH gave me a menu so at least I didn't have to worry about what to make. All I had to do was not to mess up! Total pressure!

Turkey Fillets with Mustard-Cornichon Sauce

Food is my passion. I love to cook. I love to eat. I love reading food blogs, food magazines, and cookbooks. And I love love love looking at photos of food in the internet. Sometimes, when I go through these photos, one will catch my attention more than the others. I will keep thinking about it until I can make it myself. Yesterday, when browsing online, I saw a photo of a Pork Chop in a Mustard Cornichon Sauce. Cornichon is also known as French Pickles. The image of that pork chop kept popping in my head and I just knew I had to make it. But instead of buying some pork chops, I looked for poultry. Preferably chicken fillet, but since I found none, I bought Turkey Fillets, which went fabulous with this sauce!

Deviled Eggs / Oeufs Mimosa

I'm running out of ideas for dinner meals! The month of September is when students go back to school and DO is super duper busy with her bookstore / librarie. She has to work every day from 8AM to 8PM. I try to prepare dinner for the family, but after 2 weeks I have no idea what to make anymore without repeating meals. I found it was sometimes hard to decide on meal ideas when we were back home in Cebu, but here, phewww, it's worst!

Dad is no stranger to the City of Metz. Years years ago, when he was younger, this is where he used to reside when he was in doing his "Service Militaire / Military Service". It is in this city that he met and fell in love with his first wife, DO's mother. Dad has always loved to go out, explore new adventures, and experiment restaurants. Years later, when he was remarried to my mother and I was born, there was this one restaurant I remember that we absolutely had to try which had the best Choucroute dish Dad ever had- La Taverne du Maitre Kanter.

Blanquette de Veau / Veal Stew

My favorite French show this summer has finally ended last night. Do you know which one I'm talking about? It's Secret Story 6. It's a reality show that I've been watching religiously every day for the past 15 weeks. It's very much like Big Brother, but the candidates have a personal secret each that they have to keep and prevent others to guess. The secrets were pretty interesting: one girl was born with 12 fingers, another was exchanged at birth, others had shared secrets in duos and trios. My dad complained that this was a useless show and was left wondering why the hell I cared to watch. Honestly, like most reality shows, I know it is blahhh and I won't learn anything from it. But I liked to take that one hour a day to be stress-free to watch the candidates go through a million of different emotions per day! I wasn't suprised that they announced Nadege Jones as the grand winner last night because like the 73% of people who voted for her, she caught my attention. One will never know if it was just acting from her part, but I was captivated by her tears, her laugh, and her big ouiiiiiiiiiii!

Lunch at La Table du Saulnois in Maizieres-Les-Vic, France

Dad and I were in Sarrebourg today for my "Pole Emploi convocation". I was supposed to go by train since the place is right in front of the train station, but when I realized that Dad would be alone at home I decided to take the car so he could come home with me. He was happy to come with me as he mentioned earlier that he wanted to see how Sarrebourg is now. I was hesitant to go to Sarrebourg as I've never been there before by myself, but the 43 kilometer trip went pretty smoothly. Dad waited for me in the car while I was in my meeting. I was done right before lunch and I invited Dad to eat out for lunch. A couple of restaurants came to mind but ultimately there was only place where I really wanted to eat with him - La Table du Saulnois in Maizieres-Les-Vic

The Day My Niece Left for Belgium

My niece, MO, left for Belgium today. She is starting school tomorrow and is excited but also scared at the same time. This is definitely a new chapter for her, especially since she doesn't know anyone where she is going. She will be starting from scratch. Something I am quite familiar with, hein? :)

All Aboard America!

We are coming to the end of the holiday period and the start of classes and work. I experienced first-hand this year how quiet the month of August is. A lot of the local businesses closed their doors for days and weeks for their yearly break. I think that this is essential. We all need a break from time to time. A break to reinforce one’s strength and motivation. A break to welcome a change of pace of life. A break to visit other places. As a lover of travels, I look forward to discovering beautiful France and the rest of the world!

One of DO’s nephew has chosen to visit New York this year. In fact, he is there right now and returning home tomorrow. He is having an amazing time. I cannot wait to discover America one day! In fact, I stumbled on a website, All Aboard America which caters to corporate group transportation. If I had known earlier that he was going to America, I would have suggested he check out this website. He is vacationing with a bunch of friends and visiting through America by this means of transportation might have suited them well! If you are interested, you might want to check it out. Cebu Chicharon - The Day I Finished My Last Pack

I'm so sad! I just ate the last pack of my Chicharon stash. When Dad came to France, my husband made sure he brought with him a couple packs of Chicharon. In my list of Pinoy favorites, one of my most missed is really Chicharon. I've been digging into my Chicharon packs until I realized I only had one more left!
